Since 2021, re:NAN has been involved in the Malang music scene, especially the 80s inspired post-punk and alternative music scene. One thing that re:NAN pays attention to is how saturated post-punk bands in Indonesia are with gloomy and depressive themes. Ironically, post-punk bands in Indonesia emerged since the debut of the synth pop group Goodnight Electric and new wave band The Upstairs, which were mostly playing upbeat and optimistic songs. In Malang itself, the last active synthpop and new wave band was Little Star who debuted in 2009. So, it took 14 years for the 80s music scene in Malang to produce a new generation like re:NAN.

The content for the EP "4:1 Leaving Depression" is actually taken from the life motto of re:NAN which says that "every wound must be balanced with laughter" which also signals that life should not be made difficult. The first four songs describe the problems faced by each re:NAN member, and the last song is the solution to that problem. Inspired by Depeche Mode and New Order, re:NAN tries to process the influences they ingest into a complete package for the EP "4:1 Leaving Depression" which is thick with the sound of synthesizers and drum machines but with a touch of daily themes and the conflicts of young people in Malang city, Indonesia that can resonate with the interpersonal relationships theme of young people globally. It is also can be seen as a transformative journey of re:NAN from gloomy post punk trio to optimistic new wave trio
